National Health and Fitness Day puts focus on your health

The goal is to make Canada the fittest nation on Earth.

In early June, National Health and Fitness Day is followed closely by Men’s Mental Health Week, both of which are opportunities to talk about your health and evaluate whether your fitness or activity level provides the health benefits you need.

Health Canada suggests Canadian adults (18-64) should get at least 2.5 hours of exercise each week. Exercise should be moderate to vigorous, with activities that target muscles and bones at least twice per week.

Having trouble getting moving?

  • Choose a variety of activities that you enjoy. If your exercise plan is based on running and yet you dread every step, chances are it’s not a program you’ll stick with. Challenge yourself with a hike instead.
  • Get into a routine by making exercise part of your regular day. Even better if you can find a workout buddy to keep each other on track.
  • Use public transit, walk or bike to your destinations and automatically make exercise part of your day.

And remember: every step counts. As long as you are moving, you’re making progress.
