, or terpenoids, are a group of essential oils produced alongside cannabinoids like THC and CBD by the cannabis plant, and are generally responsible for many of the distinguishing characteristics of different strains. Terpenes are expressed by many plants in nature including cannabis, but also in many edible plants, including a variety of spices and herbs. Among the most abundant terpenes found in cannabis is caryophyllene, classified as a sesquiterpene. Like other terpenes, it has also been the subject of much medical research. Below we present a small sample of current, peer-reviewed investigations of the medical potential of this terpene.
