Who can be a Tilray client?
As a Licensed Producer under Health Canada regulations, registration with Tilray is open to any individual who ordinarily resides in Canada and provides the appropriate medical document signed by a health care practitioner. Upon approval by Tilray a patient will have a unique ID number generated to place orders online or via phone.
What do I need on my medical document?
A medical document should contain the following information:
- The healthcare practitioner’s given name, surname, profession, business address and telephone number, facsimile number and email address (if applicable), province of practice, and provincial licence number
- Your given name, surname and date of birth
- The address of the location at which you consulted with the healthcare practitioner
- The daily quantity of dried marijuana to be used by the person, expressed in grams
- The period of use
How much Tilray product will I be able to order at one time?
Your monthly allotment will refresh every 30 days. The date is calculated by adding three days from your first order date on your current medical document. We must add three business days to account for the estimated delivery of when you received your first cannabis order. For example, if you placed your first order on January 1, 2018, you would add three days to make January 4 the beginning of your 30-day period. Your allotment will reset every 30 days from this date until your active medical document expires or is renewed, at which time a new 30-day period would be established.
Patients can order up to 30 times their daily limit within any 30-day period, but only 150g per order per day.
Tilray whole flower packages come in 5-gram units. Due to package design and in accordance with regulatory requirements, the amount in each package may vary from 95%-101% of the labelled amount (example – 5 gram pack may contain between 4.75-5.05 grams of product).
What forms of payment does Tilray accept?
Tilray accepts the following forms of payment:
- Major credit cards* (including American Express)
- Debit Visa
- Pre-paid credit cards, available at Canada Post or local convenience stores.
*Tilray does not accept BMO debit Mastercard.
How much cannabis can I have on me?
As noted above, there is a possession limit of either 30 times the daily quantity of dried marijuana indicated by your healthcare practitioner on your medical document, or 150 grams of dried marijuana, whichever is less.
For example, if your medical document specifies 3 grams per day, you would be allowed a maximum of 90 grams at any one time (30 days × 3 grams). However, if your medical document specifies 6 grams per day, you would only be allowed to possess a maximum of 150 grams at any one time, which would be less than your 30-day supply.
How do I travel with my cannabis?
You are allowed to carry with you the lesser of (a) thirty times your daily limit of cannabis (as set out in your medical document), or (b) 150 grams.
For air travel, we recommend contacting your airline to find out what their policy is regarding travelling with medical cannabis, within Canada. If they allow for it, you should be able to declare your medical cannabis and store it safely in your carry-on luggage.
In any case, your medical cannabis should always be in its original packaging with your patient label intact.
Please note that you CANNOT travel outside of Canada with your cannabis.

What is a vaporizer? What is vaporizing?
Vaporizers are the logical choice for moderate to experienced and/or health-conscious cannabis consumers. A vaporizer steadily heats herbs to a temperature that is high enough to extract THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids but too low for the potentially harmful toxins that are released during combustion; essentially, vaporization eliminates some of the health risks associated with smoking. This improvement comes with an equally significant reduction in odor, which is generally the first acknowledgement of first-time vaporizer users. There is a diverse landscape of vaporizer models and the market is only expanding as the technology improves.
What are the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR)?
As of August 24, 2016, the new Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) replaced the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) (which in turn had replaced the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) on April 1, 2014).
Individuals now have a choice of how to access medical cannabis. By obtaining a medical document from their health care practitioner, they may register to purchase medical cannabis from a licensed producer such as Tilray. Alternatively, they may register with Health Canada and opt to grow their own supply of medical cannabis or designate a 3rd party to grow medical cannabis for them. Learn more.
How does Tilray test for potency?
At Tilray, part of our potency testing is done in house, using methods that are validated according to international pharmacopeia, ie. US Pharmacopeia and European Pharmacopeia. Our methods and validations have been recently inspected by Health Canada and found to be fully compliant. The remaining tests are completed in a Heath Canada approved lab. Each sample is tested in triplicate to account for any variation in the plant material.
We calculate the active THC or active CBD by adding the THC + (0.877 * THCA), or CBD + (0.877 * CBDA).
Different labs may use different instruments and/or different methods for calculating total THC. For instance, gas chromatography results in decarboxylation of THCA to THC, which results in a lower total THC calculation. We use only high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure both THC and THCA, as this provides the most accurate quantification of the cannabinoids that are present.
